No Prototype. No Problem.
For the past three years, I’ve been filming prototypes for inventors. It’s some of my favourite work — somebody walks in with a thing they dreamed up at their kitchen table, and we put it on camera so the world can finally see what they’ve been seeing in their head for years.
But there was always a group of inventors I couldn’t help: the ones with nothing to film. A granted patent, a stack of schematics, maybe a 3D render — and no physical product. You can’t put a patent drawing in front of a camera. So their marketing material stayed on paper, right where their invention was stuck.
That changed this year. Let me show you a commercial I just delivered for a product you cannot buy yet — because it hasn’t been manufactured.
The invention
My client invented the Root Flow Flex: a flexible insert that drops into the bottom of any decorative plant pot and creates a false floor. Roots sit above standing water instead of in it, vertical tubes feed air and water to the root zone, and it works in pots with no drainage holes at all. If you’ve ever loved a houseplant to death by overwatering it — this is for you.
She had the patent. She had the schematics. She had no product, no prototype, and no way to show anyone what living with this thing would actually look like.


What we made
A 75-second commercial, built like any commercial I’ve produced in a decade of traditional filmmaking: a story with a problem, a solution, and a payoff.
It opens in a warm, modern Vancouver high-rise condo — walnut surfaces, linen sofa, floor-to-ceiling windows with city and mountain views. Our hero discovers the problem every plant owner knows: standing water quietly rotting her plant’s roots from below. The product arrives. Then the payoff: thriving plants, a friend arriving and admiring them, life visibly better.

The shot that sells the invention, though, is the one no camera could film: a slow push-in that dissolves through the pot wall to reveal the insert working underground — the before and after living in a single image. For an invention whose whole magic happens out of sight at the bottom of a pot, that one shot does the work of a thousand words of patent language.


The spot ends with a camera move I’m genuinely proud of — an orbit past the two women laughing, a blur through the city, rising into a golden-hour aerial over the Vancouver skyline.


This was not a tech demo
I want to be precise about why this project matters, because the internet is full of AI video experiments. This wasn’t one. This was a commissioned commercial for a paying client, produced through the same process as any production I’ve ever delivered: script drafts checked against her actual product claims, storyboards, review rounds, her notes, my revisions, her sign-off. The deliverable went into her marketing toolkit the same way a filmed commercial would.
The craft is real, too. AI video isn’t one magic button — it’s directing. Every shot was generated, reviewed, diagnosed, and refined until it locked, the same iteration loop as post-production, just with prompts instead of reshoots. Character consistency, lighting logic, lens behaviour, pacing — the same filmmaking knowledge I’ve built over ten years behind real cameras is exactly what keeps AI footage from looking like AI footage.
The pipeline
For the curious (and the skeptical), here’s the actual production stack behind this spot:
- Claude and ChatGPT — scriptwriting, shot lists, and structure, iterated draft by draft against the inventor’s real product claims
- Higgsfield Seedance 2.0 — primary video generation, shot by shot
- Midjourney — character and environment reference design
- Nano Banana Pro — still-image scene building: compositing characters into sets, redressing rooms, relighting frames
- GPT Image 2 — additional image generation and detail work
- Magnific — high-fidelity product and location renders
- ElevenLabs — voiceover
- Milanote — the production bible: boards for every scene, reference, and revision
Every one of these tools is publicly available to anyone. That’s exactly the point: access isn’t the skill. Knowing them is not the same as directing them — the same way owning a camera has never made anyone a filmmaker.
Why this matters if you’re an inventor
Here’s the situation most inventors are in: the patent is granted, the manufacturing quotes are terrifying, and every conversation that could move the invention forward — licensing pitches, investor meetings, crowdfunding pages, retail buyers — depends on making strangers instantly understand a product they cannot hold.
A schematic doesn’t do that. A commercial does. People don’t license line drawings; they license things they can already see selling.
An AI-produced commercial means you can walk into a licensing meeting with a finished spot that shows your invention working, in a real home, solving a real problem, before you’ve spent a dollar on tooling or manufacturing. It’s the closest thing to a time machine your invention will ever get: marketing material from a future where the product already exists.
And the economics finally make sense.
